FAQs

How does Hands On Heads align with our school's approach to literacy and learning?

Hands On Heads has a multidimensional approach to literacy and learning—where structured and explicit teaching meets student agency, voice and collaboration. Our literacy strategies and instructional practices are grounded in evidence and informed by research, ensuring high-impact, purposeful learning. We believe in building teachers' capacity through instructional coaching, not through slides, scripts and prepared resources.

What are the FOUR steps to literacy success with Hands On Heads?

1. Initial Strategy Session

In our first session, we’ll discuss your school’s context and approach to literacy and learning. A teacher and leader pre-coaching survey will support goals set for literacy success.  I’ll meet and greet teachers to establish rapport and ensure they’re clear on next steps.

2. Coaching Cycles

Every two weeks, I’ll support teachers in a group setting by facilitating Literacy/English planning sessions where we’ll identify goals, review practice, track progress and analyse data, along with providing teachers with 1:1 in-classroom experiences, such as modelling and observations.

3. Support and Feedback
Teachers will receive resources, materials, coaching booklets, and virtual support between sessions. Leaders will receive updates on progress with regular check-ins each term.

4. Closing Strategy Session

We’ll use initial survey data to review progress and set clear next steps, ensuring everyone feels confident and aligned moving forward.

Is The Instructional Literacy Coaching Experience the right fit for our school?

If your school is committed to building long-lasting literacy success. This 12-month experience is designed to embed effective literacy and teaching practices through tailored coaching cycles, classroom modelling and collaborative planning. It supports both teachers and leaders to bridge theory with practice, build capacity and see meaningful improvements in student outcomes—without overwhelming your team.

What does one coaching cycle in The Instructional Literacy Coaching Experience look like in reality?

Week A:

  • 60 minutes**

  • observation or modelling (teachers’ discretion)

  • facilitating and/or attending collaborative planning sessions

  • reviewing data to establish a targeted goal or debrief of feedback to set a new goal

Week B:

  • 120 minutes**

  • observation or modelling (opposite of the previous session)

  • a review from Week A’s observation/modelling with feedback and directions for next steps

**duration of coaching cycles to be negotiated

What if we just don't have the budget at the moment, but we need to support our teachers?

Many schools start with Classroom Clarity or Term Taster

focused on a specific year level (Years 5-9) and a particular point of need, and then expand based on outcomes, feedback and resourcing.
